Heli Skiing is one way to access acres and acres of untouched powder snow. You don't have to be an expert skier or boarder to experience the thrill of heliskiing and cat skiing. There are a range of options suitable for intermediate skiers and boarders, who are happy on red and black runs in all conditions so something to suit pretty much everyone. Forget the creaky chairlifts or queues in the morning and jump in the helicopter with your friends and have the time of your life!
Last Frontier Heliskiing
You will be provided with a guide and all the gear to ensure that you have an amazing time. Find out what powder skis can really do and jump into the deep champagne powder snow! Last Frontier Heliskiing is one of the most northerly heliski operations in British Columbia. With access to a huge area of 2.2 million acres it is one of the most snow intensive areas of the world. The Northern Coastal Mountains and the Skeena Mountain Range are full of glaciers and have great forests at lower elevations so that you can ski the trees on the days of poor visibility. There is access to an unbelievable amount of challenging terrain both above and below treeline where you will certainly be away from the crouds. Bell 2 Lodge is found in the centre of the heliski area with runs available in every direction from your doorstep. Ripley Creek takes on the southern portion of the area with the majority of the skiing being done north of the town of Stewart.
Whistler Heliskiing
Whistler Heliskiing offer one day packages, led by professional, certified guides and include the use of avalanche transceiver, 3 runs (approx 7500 feet), on-mountain lunch and return ground transport from Whistler Village. Multi day and 4-6 run packages are also available.
RK Heliskiing, Panorama
For those of you who decide to ski in Panorama, Kicking Horse, Banff, Lake Louise or Fernie you can experience the powder of the Purcell mountain range in style. Daily packages include breakfast, a mountainside lunch and the rental of your 'fat' powder skis.
Cat Skiing
If you want the wildness of heliskiing without the helicopter flight cat skiing could be the way forward for you instead.
Whistler Cat Skiing offer a full day of Snowcat assisted backcountry skiing and boarding throughout a 4,300 acre ski area. An average day will give you of 7,000 to 10,000 vertical feet.
Keystone Cat Skiing can be done if you are staying in Vail, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Copper and offers full-day tours into Independence Bowl. The guides will take you down the best runs and lunch is provided in a cosy hut, catered by the five-star Alpenglow Stube.
Steamboat Powdercats offers 10,000 acres of skiable terrain on the Buffalo Pass. This area is home to some of the deepest, driest and most consistent snowfall in all of the Rocky Mountains. Perfect as it is just 20 minutes from downtown Steamboat Springs.
Grand Targhee Cat Skiing is close to Jackson Hole. As the area receives some of the highest snowfalls in North America the powder here is just awesome! Expert guides will lead you through huge bowls, cruising areas and tree skiing for a full variety. With amazing views wherever you go, this is the best cat skiing in Wyoming.
If however, you fancy skiing somewhere really completely different then head to Chile and ski Valle Nevado. Their heli ski operation will give you access to kilometres of virgin snow. Expert mountain guides use state-of-the-art safety equipment, as they escort clients into 6,000 vertical foot runs of Andean powder. With the helicopter pad directly at the Valle Nevado Resort, you only need to walk outside to take advantage of this once in a lifetime flight into the Andes. Special gear is available at the Ski Rental, and discounts are offered to guests.
